Sport is an activity which a lot of people take part in. Essential daily activities like cycling, walking can also be treated as a sport. On a more professional note, activities like car racing, wind surfing etc can be termed as sports. With athletes requiring to stretch every muscle in their bodies when playing the sport, sports massage has gained tremendous importance in toning the muscles.

Sports massage when given properly to an athlete ensures that their skills, stamina, suppleness and speed are maintained which provides them a platform to deliver consistent results. The criticality and importance of a sports massage will be dependant the toughness and complexity of the sport.

For example, a sport like chess does not require the chess player to have his muscles massaged. At the same time, when a person plays Soccer it is important that his muscles are loose after the game.

Sports massage has now become an integral part of the training regimen of sportsmen. The fact that training from a sport massage is always beneficial to a sportsman lot of sportsman tend to over-train. This may have dangerous consequences on the body as the body can only take hard work to a limit. Stretching the body beyond its limits may result in fatigue for the sportsman and in some serious cases, the muscles and bones would breakdown causing some form of paralysis.

Sports massage needs to be applied skillfully and much like other forms of massage, one needs to understand human anatomy and physiology carefully to give sports massage. This is the most effective method to reduce muscle tension and in some cases also allows the person to 'repair' damaged muscles.

Though, sports massage is highly effective to sportsman, there are some cases in which people are advised against using sports massage as a therapy.

  • Acute Traumas - When a person is suffering from muscle tears, ligament damages, contusions, massage therapy may not provide the best alternative to treatment. Most of these would need to be diagnosed deeper prompting me to say that sports people are advised to stay away from sports massage in case they suffer from any of these ailments.

  • Infectious Skin Disease - Should you suffer from a Bacterial Infection, Fungal infection or viral infection, it is highly recommended that you do not go for a Sports Massage.

Sports Massage should be given in controlled packages to sportspersons. This will allow the body to benefit from the positive effects of the sports massage as an overdose of sports massage to a body may result in body fatigue. Remember, sportspersons are extremely conscious about their performance and it may be possible that an overdose of sports massage may bring down their performance levels.
